4 things you should know before you buy an off-the-shelf teeth-whitening kit
We know that your Instagram feed is full of people with dazzling smiles, which means there’s a good chance that you look in the mirror or at your own smiley selfies and think: “Could mine be whiter, too?”
We know that because it’s one of the things we get asked about most often (not to mention that the number of Google searches related to teeth whitening is off the charts)!
Before you decide if teeth whitening is for you, here are 4 key things you should consider.
1. Is teeth whitening safe?
Done in consultation with a dental professional, whitening teeth is a low-risk, predictable, extremely effective and reasonably fast procedure.
There is a chance that having your teeth whitened will increase temporary sensitivity in some teeth, but there’s generally an underlying reason for that, which we can then investigate.
Any concern that the procedure might cause some damage to tooth enamel is unfounded, as peroxide is basically made from water and urea, which are natural products that have been shown to be safe when used appropriately.
2. What options are available?
There are three ways you can go:
- Use an over-the-counter product
- Get a customised take-home kit from a dentist
- Sit in a chair for about an hour to get it done at the dental clinic.
Each has its pros and cons.
Over-the-counter products use a diluted concentration of peroxide to ensure that they’re safe to use unsupervised. They’re also one-size-fits-all, so could miss some of your teeth, particularly near the gum line. The results from these products are also less likely to be long-lasting.
A take-home kit also uses a lower concentration of peroxide than an in-chair treatment, reducing the risk of tooth sensitivity. You use custom-made whitening trays which you fill with whitening gel. You wear the trays for 30 minutes to several hours every day.
In-chair whitening uses a whitening gel with a much stronger concentration of peroxide. After an hour or even less, the gel breaks apart the bonds between stained molecules, giving you a dramatically brighter smile. Specially formatted lights are used to achieve optimal results. The high-power light activates the gel, allowing oxygen to penetrate your teeth more thoroughly.
3. Why over-the-counter whitening kits generally fall short
Whitening strips, brush-on gels, and charcoal powders promise a Hollywood smile for the price of a coffee. In practice, most fall short for a few consistent reasons:
The whitening agent is weak.
Over-the-counter products are legally capped at low concentrations of peroxide, which limits how much they can actually lift stains.
One-size-fits-all trays don’t fit anyone well.
Generic trays leave gaps, so the gel spreads unevenly (patchy results and gum irritation are common complaints).
They can’t address the cause of the staining.
Deeper, long-term staining (from coffee, tea, red wine, or tobacco) sits on the enamel surface, which most store-bought products never reach.
There’s no professional oversight.
Existing dental conditions such as decay, gum disease, or exposed root surfaces may need to be addressed before whitening. These are things a dentist checks for before treatment, but a chemist-stocked box can’t.
The result is often months of low-grade effort for a barely noticeable change … or worse, sensitive teeth with little to show for it.
4. Your health insurance might slash your out-of-pocket cost
Most Australian health insurance funds have an allowance that covers teeth whitening. If this applies to you, there’s never been a better time to get your teeth whitened professionally by the Middleborough Dental Care team.
That’s because we’re currently running a Spring Offer that makes it even easier to see what your whitening could cost with your insurance benefit applied.
Head to our offer page for all the details of MDC’s Spring 2026 Whitening Offer and book a time that suits you.
A brighter smile might already be more affordable than you think.
